Kenya National Commission on Human Rights

Mandate

The Core Mandate of the Commission is to further the protection and promotion of human rights in Kenya. The Commission was enshrined by the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights Act 2002 No.9 of 2002. The National Commission as per the act commenced on 12 March 2003 and became operational on 29 July 2003. In 2010 the 2002 act was repealed and the commission constituted under Article 59 0f the Constitution of Kenya 2010 and opperationalized by the KNCHR Act 2011.


Functions

The National Commission acts as a watch-dog over the government in the area of human rights and ensuring the Government’s compliance with obligations under international treaties and conventions on human rights.

It plays a key leadership role in moving the country towards a human rights state.
To inform and educate the public about human rights for the purposes of enhancing respect for human rights;
