Canadian Human Rights Commission

Mandate

The Commission works with employers, service providers, individuals, unions, governmental and non-governmental organizations, and provincial and territorial human rights bodies to foster understanding and commitment to achieving a society where human rights are respected in everyday practices.

The Commission was enshrined by the Canadian Human Rights Act and the Employment Equity Act and established in 1978.

Functions

Its role is to redress discrimination against individuals and also to help correct persistent patterns of inequality, discourage discrimination before it occurs, inform the public about equality and identify emerging human rights issues. The CHRC has been promoting and strengthening the role of NHRIs at the international and regional levels for over 20 years, and more recently as Chair of the ICC from 2007-2010.
