Office of the Ombudsman

Mandate

To provide quality service in an impartial and expeditious manner while investigating complaints by Barbadians or persons residing in Barbados who consider that the conduct of a Government, Ministry, Department or Statutory Authority is unreasonable, improper or inadequate. The Ombudsman Office Act is embodied in the Laws of Barbados Cap 8A. The Office of Ombudsman was established by Act of Parliament on 5th January, 1981 but the appointment to the Office was effective on January 1, 1987.


Functions

To investigate whether injustice has been caused by improper, unreasonable, Department or other authority, subject to the Act; to investigate any course of conduct or anything done or omitted by any person in the exercise of administrative functions in respect of any business of the Government, including the administration of any board or department, and to assist in the promotion of a more effective system of democratic governance.
