Australian Human Rights Commission

Mandate

The Commission has functions under the following federal legislation:

Australian Human Rights Commission Act 1986 (Cth)
Racial Discrimination Act 1975 (Cth)
Sex Discrimination Act 1984 (Cth)
Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (Cth)
Age Discrimination Act 2004 (Cth).

The Commission was established by the Australian Human Rights Commission Act 1986 (Cth).


Functions

The Commission’s primary functions include: investigation and conciliation of complaints about discrimination and breaches of human rights; holding public inquiries into human rights issues of national importance; developing human rights education programs and resources for schools, workplaces and the community; providing independent legal advice to assist courts in cases that involve human rights principles; providing advice to governments to develop laws and policies consistent with international human rights agreements.
