CFNHRI Meeting in Geneva on 21st March 2016

21 March 2016

The Commonwealth Forum of National Human Rights Institutions (CFNHRI) will meet on Monday 21st March, 2016, at the UN Palais des Nations. This meeting is open to all members of the CFNHRI and Commonwealth Accredited NGOs.

This meeting will be hosted by the Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission (NIHRC), which took the chair of the CFNHRI in November last year. The CFNHRI Chair, and Chief Commissioner of the NIHRC, Les Allamby, will lead the plenary session and will open the discussion on the draft Strategic Plan 2016-2019.

The Chair will also launch a Guide for National Human Rights Institutions on ‘Disarmament, Demobilisation and Reintegration’. This Guide is the first publication produced by the NIHRC in its role as Chair, and aims to assist National Human Rights Institutions working in post-conflict societies.

This is a great opportunity and great honour for the Commission to take up the Commonwealth Chair and is indicative of how Northern Ireland is regarded on the international stage. We hope to build on the work of our predecessor, the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia. We also hope to progress existing work on conflict resolution, disability and equality issues.

NIHRC Chief Commissioner, Les Allamby
