Human rights are universal. They belong to all of us, simply because we are human. Our rights do not change as we get older, however, negative attitudes, discrimination and threats to dignity can affect older people’s enjoyment of human rights. OHCHR indicates that approximately 10% of the world’s population is aged over 60, and this is expected to double by 2050. With an ageing global population, as NHRIs we must act to protect, promote and advance the human rights of all.
